Implementing the Island Plan

Many of the Island Plan’s 207 proposed strategies for achieving the objectives outlined in the plan are already underway; some helped shape the Plan, others emerged from the planning process. With the adoption of the Plan, the MVC turned to a two-part program:
  • Public Education: sharing the information and ideas with town boards and members of the community, and
  • Implementation: working with town boards and others to prioritize and carry out recommended strategies.
We continue to make progress in implementing various aspects of the Island Plan. Some of the recent achievements include:
  • DRI Checklist: In December 2012, the MVC adopted a revised DRI Checklist that reflects many of the provisions in the Island Plan, notably calling for more careful review of development applications in more environmentally sensitive areas, while relaxing the review in less sensitive areas.
  • Wind Energy Plan for Dukes County: As recommended in the Island Plan section on Energy, in fall 2012, the MVC adopted this plan - prepared in collaboration with the seven towns of Dukes County - giving guidance to wind turbine development on land and in the ocean.
  • Site Design and Landscape Policy: As recommended in the Island Plan Natural Environment section, the Commission adopted a policy for the MVC's review of Developments of Regional Impact and for use by town boards and members of the public.
  • Coastal Ponds: As recommended in the Island Plan section on Water Resources, intermunicipal committees are working on how best to control nitrogen pollution in Lagoon and Sengekontacket ponds. Massachusetts Estuaries Project studies are underway for other ponds to help establish maximum nitrogen load limits for each watershed and identify the most cost effective ways to achieve them.
  • ArtsMV: As recommended in the Cultural Resources section of the Island Plan, an arts and culture collaborative has been established. It is working to promote the Island as a cultural destination and to foster development of cultural activities.
