A first-ever collection of oral histories by the MVC chronicles much of the last 50 years, including the MVC’s creation in 1974 and other turning points for the Island.

Based on interviews conducted by former Martha’s Vineyard Museum Oral History Curator Linsey Lee between 2000 and 2014 and MVC Research and Communications Manager Alex Elvin between 2023 and 2025, the book features 21 narratives, along with images by several well-known Island photographers.

Among the subjects are Lewis Crampton, who as the Commissioner of the MA Dept. of Community Affairs worked with the Island community in 1973–1974 to develop the state legislation that created the MVC and provided an alternative to the controversial Islands Trust Bill; Bob Komives, who was the MVC’s first executive director beginning in 1974; and many others who helped advance the MVC’s mission over the years. Together they provide a wide-ranging and unique picture of the Island’s development since the early 1970s.

The MVC is grateful to everyone who participated with interviews, provided photos, or helped to verify facts and dates.
